Abstract

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is a conscious perception of sound sensation that occurs without any external stimulus or external source, and is described by patients as ringing, crackling, hissing, or rarely, musical sound. Tinnitus is associated with many factors, especially hypertension, which is a multifactorial clinical condition. The aim of our study is to investigate the frequency of tinnitus in hypertension patients and discuss it in the light of the relevant literature.

In our study, the frequency of tinnitus was investigated in 63 adult patients diagnosed with hypertension between January 2020 and June 2023. In addition to routine laboratory and radiological examinations, the patients' vitamin D, vitamin B12, magnesium and folate levels were also measured. The t test was used for statistical analysis, and p values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

There were 30 (47.61%) female and 33 (52.38%) male patients included in the study. A total of 15 (23.8%) patients, eight males and seven females, had tinnitus. The average age of patients with tinnitus was 68.66±9.49 years and the average age of patients without tinnitus was 62.39±9.89 years. The mean age was significantly higher in hypertensive patients with tinnitus (p<0.05). The average vitamin B12 level was significantly lower in hypertensive patients with tinnitus (p<0.05). Eight of 15 patients with tinnitus (53.33%) and 15 of 48 patients without tinnitus (31.24%) were diabetic.

In our study, a very high tinnitus frequency of 23.8% was observed in hypertensive patients, and the relationship between tinnitus and hypertension is striking, especially in our elderly patients. However, since hypertension and tinnitus are mutually related, all cases with tinnitus, including young people, should be evaluated for hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia. Additionally, deficiencies in vitamin D and vitamin B12 levels should be avoided.
