GENERAL SITUATION OF BEEKEEPING ACTIVITIES IN DIYARBAKIR CITY (TURKEY)

Abstract

The honeybee production is to come into question as one of the most important economical sources in our country as being in the world. Turkey, Diyarbakır city and surrounding has an important beekeeping potential with natural plant cover and honey bee races diversity, suitable geographical structure and different climate conditions. This study was carried out to determine the general situation of beekeeping activities and beekeepers in Diyarbakır, which has ecological conditions suitable for beekeeping. Within the scope of the research, survey questionnaire findings of 26 questions conducted with 80 beekeepers from Diyarbakır Province Bee Breeders Association were evaluated. According to the answers given to the questions, it was determined that the most 41-50 age group was engaged in beekeeping, 73% was the only source of income, beekeeping, mostly secondary education graduates, and the majority of them were from the family. The detailed results obtained from the survey are presented in Table 1. Honey yield of beekeepers per colony was determined as an average of 16-20 kg and it was revealed on the subject. In conclusion, it is thought that this study will be useful in determining the priorities and deficiencies of beekeeping activities in Diyarbakır and will be a guide in the studies to be carried out.
