The Design of a Light Tonnage Press System with Servo Motor Driven Ball Screw Mechanism and Investigation of Energy Consumption

In the industrial field, the pressing technique for the forming process is widely used. The machines and drive systems used in the pressing process must be designed to meet some demands, such as quantity, tonnage, and speed. Depending on their drive systems, presses can have hydraulic, pneumatic, or electromechanical power systems. Electromechanical systems are becoming widespread in light tonnage and high-speed applications. Research has shown that the interface programs for sizing and selecting such systems are primarily foreign. Considering the necessity of developing a local application, we have initiated studies to develop an interface design that can compare both sizing and energy consumption. This study examined the design of a two-ton capacity press system driven by a ball screw linear actuator and its energy consumption during the process. With the help of the developed interface, the user enters demands regarding the pressing process, such as cycle time, working conditions, kinetics, and kinematic values (stroke, speed profile, force, working year, connection type, etc.). According to these requests entered by the user, the ball screw-shaft mechanism and servo motor that should be used in the press system are sized, and information is also provided about the amount of energy consumed during the process and carbon emissions. Within the scope of the study, a product library is also created from the company's products. Product selection and comparison can also be automatically performed from this library to meet user demands. In this way, it can be determined which product is appropriate. The study is thought to be a guide in evaluating the investments to be made, especially for those working in light tonnage press systems.
