Abstract

Since the discovery of the "ABO" and "Rh" blood group systems, the relationship of blood groups with various diseases has been investigated. The distribution of blood groups is different in different races and populations, and sometimes, the distribution varies in different regions of the same country as well. In this study, the relationship of infertile men’s "ABO" and "Rh" blood group systems with their sperm parameters and spermiogram diagnoses in a province in the south of Turkey was investigated. Male individuals diagnosed with primary or secondary infertility who applied for semen analysis for infertility research at the andrology laboratory of and education and research hospital were included in the study. A total of 1210 volunteers with a history of at least 12 months of infertility and with no identifiable cause of infertility in their spouse constituted the sample of the study. "ABO" and "Rh" blood groups of the individuals who accepted to participate in the study were determined with the gel centrifugation method. "ABO" and "Rh" blood group distributions were compared with semen volume, sperm concentration, total sperm count, percentage of progressive motile sperm and total progressive motile sperm count. However, there was no statistically significant difference between A, B, O and AB blood groups, Rh (+), Rh (-) systems and sperm parameters (p>0,05). Furthermore, among the spermiogram diagnoses made as a result of semen analysis, no significant difference was found between normozoospermia, oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, azoospermia, and A, B, O and AB blood groups, and Rh (+) and Rh (-) systems (p>0,05). In our study, although "ABO" and "Rh" blood group systems are risk factors for some diseases, it was found that there was no risk factor for sperm parameters and spermiogram diagnoses in infertile men. We think that the present study is important as it is the first study in our country to investigate the relationship between "ABO" and "Rh" blood groups and male infertility and is the only study in the world literature investigating the relationship between sperm parameters and spermiogram diagnoses.
