This study was conducted to examine the attitudes of health sciences faculty students towards lesbians and gays (homosexual) and the demographic variables that affect this.
391 students from Physiotherapy, Nursing and Audiology Departments of Health Sciences Faculty of a foundation university in Istanbul participated in this study. The demographic information form included the student's age, gender, university department, academic year, presence of homosexual friends, the idea of making friends with a homosexual person, and the place of religion in her life were asked. Attitudes Towards Lesbian and Gays Scale-Short Form was used. Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test were used to compare attitudes according to the factors examined. Post-hoc analysis was calculated by Dunn's test when statistical significance was determined.
The mean of the students' attitude score was calculated as 28.61 ± 10.34. The students' attitudes towards homosexuality did not differ according to gender, the department they studied, and grade level (p=0.28, 0.96, and 0.34; respectively), as their level of perception of religiosity increased, they showed negative attitudes towards homosexual individuals (p=0.0001). It was determined that students who have homosexual friends and say "I make friends with a homosexual individual" describe themselves as less religious and have a more positive attitude towards homosexuality (p=0.001).
It was observed that students who defined themselves as less religious had a more positive attitude towards homosexual individuals and had a more positive approach to friendship. The studies on the factors affecting the attitudes of candidate health professionals towards homosexual individuals may be appropriate to plan.
