Abstract

After the Industrial Revolution, many industrial structures remained idle with the use of computers and the transition to automation. In countries that have experienced the Industrial Revolution before, these places, which were built for machines, have begun to be transformed for the use of people. With the emergence of the concept of industrial heritage, the subject started to be handled in a different dimension, and many industrial buildings were registered and taken under protection. In addition to the structures that are converted back to their original functions, there are structures that have different functions. While assigning different functions to the buildings, besides the concept of protection, the new function should be in accordance with the existing space setup of the building.

The mezzanine floors, walls, passages and materials used in the reuse should not damage the original architectural features. The buildings to be re-functionalized should be considered together with their surroundings, and cultural, economic, social and societal reasons should be taken into consideration.

Within the scope of the study, old olive oil factories and oil mills were discussed. After the tourism-oriented development of the Ayvalık region, the olive oil factories in the city center were moved out of the city, and the factories in the city center remained idle. The buildings, which are cultural heritage, have been re-functionalized and preserved.

In this study; Beyaz Yalı Hotel, one of the old oil houses that remained idle and re-functioned, has been discussed in terms of mass, structural, spatial interventions, architectural heritage and industrial heritage.
