Abstract

There are many types of primary headache. Homocysteine causes oxidative stress. Vitamin B12 and folic acid depletion leads to hyperhomocysteinemia. Zinc has been shown to protect against oxidative stress, while copper causes oxidative stress. This study aimed to determine the changes in homocysteine and vitamin B12, folic acid, zinc, and copper levels that cause oxidative damage in patients with primary headache and to determine the contribution of these parameters to the etiology of the disease. A total of 60 individuals were included in the study, including 30 patients diagnosed with primary headache (Group I) and 30 completely healthy individuals (Group II). Serum homocysteine , folic acid, vitamin B12, zinc and copper levels were compared between the groups in the study. A statistically significant increase (p<0.05) in homocysteine levels and a statistically significant decrease (p<0.05) in folic acid levels were observed in Group I. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups in vitamin B12, zinc and copper levels (p>0.05).In patients with primary headache, homocysteine and folic acid levels may play a role in the etiology and we think that folic acid can be used in treatment.
