The Effect of Different Growing Media on Some Seed Emergence Parameters in Eremurus spectabilis M.Bieb

Özet

Eremurus spectabilis M.Bieb is an important wild plant species consumed as a vegetable. Besides its medicinal use, the plant is also an ornamental geophyte used in the cut flower industry. In this study, some parameters related to the emergence performance of E. spectabilis M.Bieb seeds sown in different seedling growing media were evaluated. For this purpose, E. spectabilis M.Bieb seeds with their tips cut off were sown in 11 different growing media and subjected to cold moist stratification at 4°C for 35 days. After 35 days, when their emergence began in the growing media, the seeds were transferred to climate chambers with a temperature of 22 ± 2 °C and a photoperiod regime of 16 hours of light/8 hours of darkness. For the emergence test, counting began on the last day of the cold moist stratification treatment (35th day) and the final counting day was set as the 22nd day. Seed emergence was recorded regularly at 2-day intervals. At the end of the tests, the emergence rate (%), mean emergence time (days), emergence speed (days), radicle (cm) and hypocotyl length (cm), micro-sprout length (cm) and diameter (cm) were calculated. The highest emergence rate of 53.00% was obtained only from the medium containing pumice sand (1, v). It was followed by a medium containing pumice sand + perlite (3:1, v/v) at a rate of 46.00%. The highest hypocotyl length (5.17 cm), radicle length (1.36 cm), micro-sprout length (6.53 cm), and diameter (0.15 cm) were obtained from the cocopeat + perlite (3:1, v/v) medium.
