Digital agriculture Precision nitrogen management Nitrogen use efficiency Sensor-based monitoring Environmental sustainability

Özet

This article is a comprehensive review of recent advances in digital agriculture and precision nitrogen management. It highlights how conventional uniform nitrogen application leads to low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and serious environmental issues-such as nitrate pollution and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions-and examines the potential of digital technologies to overcome these challenges. The study outlines the conceptual framework of precision nitrogen management, detailing monitoring technologies such as plant- and soil-based sensors, UAVs, and satellite imaging, along with artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms-including Random Forest and XGBoost-that process these data for predictive insights. Furthermore, the review demonstrates how these digital approaches not only improve yield and economic efficiency by better synchronizing nitrogen inputs with crop demand but also play a crucial role in reducing N₂O emissions, nitrate leaching, and the overall carbon footprint of agriculture. In conclusion, while acknowledging existing challenges related to data quality, system integration, and widespread adoption, the paper emphasizes that digital nitrogen management is an essential tool for achieving sustainable and climate-smart agricultural goals.
