Özet

Current weed management is one of the major issues that have continuously been faced by agriculture, the main reason for which is the worldwide development of herbicide-resistant weed populations. The reliance solely on chemical herbicides for an extended period has led resistance mechanisms in various species to evolve in a rapid pace thus threatening to food production and to the agroecosystems' stability. This overview paper deals with the fundamental processes of herbicide resistance in weeds, especially the resistance cases at the site of action and the so-called non-target resistance together with the consequences these have for the agronomic practices. In addition, the review covers the groundwork for biological control use implementation as a green, sustainable, or auxiliary solution to the herbicide use. Biological pathogens, insects, and other natural enemies of weeds are the promising selective techniques for suppressing weeds that, however, do not device the health of the whole ecosystem. Consequently, biological control, when combined with reduced herbicide use and ecologically friendly farming, can provide sustainable weed management. The paper ends with an outline of the problems encountered during a large-scale practice and the expected future potential of aiming at natural weed control by progressing in innovations, carrying out field trials, and obtaining endorsements in policy matters.
